Terms of Use

Version 0.2 · Effective 7 September 2026

Plain-language draft. These terms say what we mean and are written to be read. They have not yet been reviewed by a lawyer. When a reviewed version replaces them, the app will ask you to accept again if anything important changes.

The one thing that matters most. GF Compass tells you what is known about a place, who said it and how old it is. It cannot see into a kitchen. Confirm with the restaurant before you order, every time.

1. Who we are, what these terms cover

GF Compass (“the app”, “we”, “us”) is operated by an individual in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. These terms cover the GF Compass mobile app, the website gfcompass.ca and the service behind them. By installing or using the app you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the app.

2. What GF Compass is, and is not

GF Compass is an information tool. It shows places to eat together with gluten-free information collected from public map data, restaurant websites and menus, and reports from other people. Every piece of information shows its source and its date.

GF Compass is not:

The words “dedicated”, “separate prep” and “gluten-free options” describe what a source has said about a place. They do not describe what will happen when you order. The app cannot know what happened in any kitchen.

3. What you agree to

4. Reports you send

You can send reports, confirmations and corrections about a place. When you do:

5. Acceptable use

You must not:

We may block an install that breaks these rules, without notice.

6. Data sources and third-party content

Their terms apply to their data. Opening a website, a phone number or directions from the app hands you to a service with its own terms and privacy policy.

7. Restaurants

If you own or run a place shown in the app, you can ask us to correct or remove information about it, or tell us about your kitchen practices, at [email protected]. We do not charge restaurants and we do not accept payment for how a place is shown.

8. Our content

The GF Compass name, icon, design, and the way the information is organised and presented belong to us. Do not use them to suggest that we endorse a restaurant, product or service. Open-source components used by the app are listed in the app under “Open-source licences” and keep their own licences.

9. Availability and changes to the service

The app is currently in private testing. We may change, suspend or stop the app or any part of it at any time. Information may be added, corrected or removed at any time. We do not promise that the app will be available, uninterrupted, error-free or up to date.

10. No warranty

The app and everything in it are provided “as is” and “as available”, without any warranty or condition of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of accuracy, completeness, fitness for a particular purpose or merchantability, and without any warranty that any food is free of gluten or any other allergen.

11. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss, illness, injury or damage of any kind, whether direct or indirect, arising from your use of the app, your reliance on any information in it, or your decision to eat anywhere, including information contributed by other users or taken from restaurants' own materials. Where liability cannot be excluded by law, it is limited to fifty Canadian dollars (CAD $50) or the amount you paid us for the app in the previous twelve months, whichever is greater.

Some laws, including consumer protection laws in Canada, do not allow some of these exclusions or limits. Nothing in these terms takes away rights that you have under those laws and that cannot be excluded.

12. Your responsibility for what you send

If a report you send breaks section 4 or 5, or your use of the app breaks the law, you agree to cover the reasonable costs we incur as a result, including reasonable legal costs, of any claim brought against us because of it.

13. App stores

If you installed the app through the Apple App Store or Google Play, these terms are between you and us, not with Apple or Google. Apple and Google have no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app and are not responsible for it, for any claim relating to it, or for its content. They may enforce these terms against you as third-party beneficiaries. You must also follow the terms of the store you used.

14. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms. The current version, with its date, is always at gfcompass.ca/terms. If the acknowledgement you accepted in the app changes in substance, the app will ask you to read and accept it again before you continue.

15. Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Manitoba and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. Any dispute will be heard by the courts of Manitoba, and you agree to their jurisdiction. If you have a problem, please write to us first; most things can be sorted out that way.

If any part of these terms is found to be unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we do not enforce a part of these terms, that is not a waiver of it. You may not transfer your rights under these terms to anyone else. These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about the app.
